Muscle and joint pain is something that everyone experiences in their
lives. Even children as young as 3 are affected by it: 25%-40% of them
are afflicted with a growing pains phenomenon, mainly during two periods
– early childhood (3-5 years) and later (8-12 years).
The majority of children state that raising pains happen mainly to
their legs, specifically in their calves, in front of their thighs or
behind the knees.
Growing pains happen most often during the late afternoon or early
evening, just before putting the kids to bed. Pain intensity is usually
at an individual level, but it has been shown to be strong enough to
wake the child from sleep.
Luckily, there’s an answer to this plight. There is a recipe for a
magnesium-based ointment mentioned in the numerous homeopathic and
alternative health communities and lot of people have been saying that
it’s effective at dealing with muscle and joint pain in general.
Lotion recipe:
Components
1.5 ounces of aloe vera gel
1.5 ounces of shea butter
1.5 ounces of magnesium oil
Half an ounce of stearic acid
Half an ounce of beeswax
3 ounces of comfrey infused oil and arnica
Preparation
Put two tablespoons of dried arnica flowers and two tbs of dried comfrey
leaves in a jar to make the infused oil. Then fill the jar with
approximately 6 ounces of olive oil, stir and place it in a pot with
around two inches of water in it. Keep the pan on low heat for 2-3 hours
and make sure the water doesn’t evaporate and the herbs don’t get
fried.
Place the comfrey and arnica infused oil, beeswax and stearic acid
into a measuring cup or heatproof bowl. Place the bowl in a pan
containing a few inches of water and keep it on a medium-low heat until
the beeswax has melted.
Turn off the heat and stir the shea butter until it melts and then take
the pan off the hotplate, remove the measuring cup or bowl from the pan
and let it cool down until a layer shows at the top.
When both the mixtures are approximately at a body temperature,
combine them. Pour the magnesium/aloe compound into the wax mixture
while stirring with a mixer for 3-5 minutes, until it becomes thick and
cools down.
After you have finished mixing, place it into a container that’s not
made from metal (because it can cause it to rust). It’s best to put it
into a squeezable container for easier usage.
The Benefits
Magnesium oil, which is the main ingredient for this concoction, is used
to treat growing pains. They (and other muscle/joint pain) are usually
caused by mineral deficiency in the bones. For example collagen, which
bonds with calcium to form bone structures. If a child is magnesium
deficient, calcium in the bones is not stable and causes cramps known as
growing pains.
Magnesium oil has been used in treating these pains by many people,
but since it could start to irritate the skin over time, we’ve included
other components to moderate this effect.
