Every New Year
countless numbers of people pledge to hit the gym and reinvent
themselves. Achieving our fitness goals can be pretty difficult,
however, when the temperatures are low, the days are short and our
post-holiday bank accounts are empty.
We caught up with global fitness expert Emily Skye
to get the skinny on how she stays motivated during the winter. Her
first tip? Play to your strengths. “It’s important that what I always
try to do is something that’s fun,” Skye says. And good news — her fun
and challenging go-to move is actually pretty simple: lunges.
To try one for
yourself, start from a standing position. Then lunge forward so that
your front thigh is parallel to the ground and your back knee is almost
touching the ground. Return to standing and repeat with your other leg.
But
getting in shape isn’t just about focusing on your physique. Skye
stresses the importance of practicing body positivity during your
fitness journey. She used fitness to overcome depression and low points
during her younger years. Now, through the power of social media, she
helps women not only lead a physically healthy life, but a mentally
healthy one too.
“If
you want to make changes to yourself, if you want to lose body fat or
you want to change your body shape, you’ve got to do it out of love
instead of hate for your body,” she says. “Be excited about [your goals]
and what your body can achieve, because we can do so much with our
bodies.”
